DeepMind Co-founder Hassabis Steps Down as CEO to Become Chair and Chief Scientist

Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis is relinquishing his day-to-day duties as CEO to become chair and chief scientist at parent company Alphabet, reports The Guardian. Koray Kavukcuoglu, a longtime colleague based in the US, will take over daily operations in the non-CEO role of senior vice-president.

Observers express concern that this leadership overhaul signals the end of DeepMind's era as an independent actor. The London-based AI division is being brought firmly into the orbit of Google's Mountain View headquarters as commercial reality takes over.
