Silicon Valley Exists Because Shockley Was a Terrible Manager

The birth of Silicon Valley might be attributed to William Shockley's poor management. The co-inventor of the transistor recruited America's brightest young semiconductor engineers, but his difficult management style led eight of them to quit collectively. They founded Fairchild Semiconductor, and two of them, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, later left to start Intel. Fairchild alumni eventually spawned dozens of semiconductor companies, laying the foundation for Silicon Valley.
