Claude Code Cross-Session Details: Free Locally, Restricted Across Machines
xiaohu · x · 2026-08-08
Further details clarify the cross-machine limitations of Claude Code's cross-session messaging feature: local different terminals can freely send messages bidirectionally; however, across different machines or on the web, it defaults to reply-only and cannot initiate new sessions.
According to official documentation, the feature requires Claude Code v2.1.224 or later and supports macOS and Linux. Claude primarily uses two tools, ListAgents and SendMessage, to achieve cross-session communication. If a code change in one session might break the build of another, Claude will proactively send a warning.
