New Orleans Uses AI for 911 Calls, Slammed by Veteran Dispatcher
tdietterich · x · 2026-08-08
New Orleans has started using AI to answer 911 calls, aiming to automatically analyze, prioritize, and filter duplicate reports. However, the move has sparked significant controversy.
A veteran 911 dispatcher with 11 years of experience strongly criticized the decision, arguing that AI cannot read between the lines or assess a caller's true situation during extreme, high-stress scenarios like domestic violence or when the caller has language barriers or injuries. Furthermore, AI cannot provide emotional support or deliver critical instructions like CPR over the phone. Critics also warn that speech recognition errors and hidden algorithmic biases could lead to fatal delays in emergency response.
