Microsoft Researcher: Designing AI for the Global South Requires End-to-End Multilinguality

kalikabali · x · 2026-08-08

Kalika Bali, Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft, discussed the challenges of designing inclusive AI for the Global South. She pointed out that AI models developed for the Global North often fail when deployed elsewhere.

She emphasized that realities like language switching, speech-first interaction, and inconsistent connectivity break system pipelines. Therefore, multilinguality should not just be treated as a data availability checkbox, but as an end-to-end design problem. Furthermore, a model's performance on benchmarks reveals almost nothing about its practical utility in diverse, real-world environments.
