Open-Weight Small Models Enable Fully Local AI Tasks from ASR to Agents
vanstriendaniel · x · 2026-08-07
Many AI tasks can now run entirely locally or on-device using recently released open-weight small models:
- PII Redaction: OpenAI privacy-filter (1.5B) for browser privacy.
- Speech-to-Text: Nemotron-3.5 ASR (0.6B) for streaming transcription.
- Document Parsing: OvisOCR2 (0.9B) for document processing.
- Agent Loops: LFM2.5 (2.6B) to run agent cycles.
- Content Moderation: Shieldstral (3B) for custom policy moderation.
- Video Understanding: Marlin-2B for video analysis.
The author notes that the next real challenge is making routing across this diverse ecosystem work effectively.
