AMD Acquires AI Chip Startup Taalas to Boost Model-Specific Accelerators
karlfreund · x · 2026-08-07
AMD has officially acquired AI chip startup Taalas. Much of Taalas' core team are former members of Tenstorrent, and its CEO previously led Tenstorrent before Jim Keller took over.
Taalas' technology route is highly distinctive: its accelerators are fully customized and hard-wired specifically for a single AI model at the hardware level. This move signals AMD's continued bet on specialized architectures in its AI compute infrastructure strategy.
