Stanford Study: Large Genome Models Can Design New Viruses

Researchers at Stanford University have successfully used large genome models to generate the genomes of new viruses capable of infecting bacteria.
Although the AI-designed viruses are closely related to existing ones, they possess distinct features that would be difficult to achieve through natural evolution. The researchers emphasized the need to proactively prepare for the potential development of AI models capable of designing pathogens targeting vertebrates, urging early consideration of biosecurity countermeasures.
