X402 Protocol Empowers AI Agents: On-Chain Micropayments Hit $50B Volume

kleffew94 · x · 2026-08-06

The X402 protocol, advanced by the Solana Foundation and Coinbase, is building a native web payment layer for AI agents. It repurposes the unused HTTP 402 Payment Required status code, enabling agents to autonomously discover resources, reason about budgets, and pay for API calls or web content on the spot without human intervention.

The protocol has already processed roughly 200 million transactions with a total volume of $50 billion across about 150,000 merchant endpoints. Most transactions are under 50 cents, enabling high-frequency micropayments unsupported by traditional card networks. Payments are settled using stablecoins like USDC on Solana.
