Wired reports that after almost 27 years at Google, legendary engineer Jeff Dean is leaving alongside Sanjay Ghemawat and two other top-tier scientists to found a new AI startup named Discovery Loop.
Speaking at Y Combinator’s Startup School last month, Dean shared his vision for an automated version of the scientific method. He proposed running thousands of automated loops—where AI proposes, implements, and evaluates experiments—to unlock groundbreaking advances in domains like science, biology, chip design, and even building better AI models. This concept forms the foundation of the new company.
