Rust Officially Adopts LLM Policy for Code Contributions

mitsuhiko · x · 2026-08-06

The Rust project has officially adopted a policy governing the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for contributions to the rust-lang/rust monorepo. The policy specifically targets PR reviewers, contributors submitting LLM-generated code, and users reporting bugs found via AI.

The policy was introduced as AI tools became increasingly common in the community. While LLMs are helpful for tasks like translation and code diagnostics, they introduced a significant issue: polished technical content no longer indicates a contributor's actual effort and understanding. The Rust project emphasizes this is not an official stance on LLMs overall, but a necessary step to preserve authentic human collaboration within the open-source community.
