On State Persistence and Visibility in the Era of Coding Agents
mmmbchang · x · 2026-08-05
Inspired by an essay from Brent Beshore (@worrydream) on the essence of programming, the author discusses interaction design for software state in the era of AI coding agents.
The author argues that state should be persistent and always visible, with zero friction in accessing it. While coding agents enable us to have ephemeral software, it shouldn't be so ephemeral that you lose track of the state or are forced to constantly regenerate it.
