Academic Peer Review in the AI Era: Using LLMs to Polish Reports and Hide Identity

With the proliferation of AI, the anonymous peer review system in academia is facing new challenges. A scholar noted that referee reports are less anonymous today because it is easy to link writing styles to specific scholars.
Therefore, it has become rational for reviewers to use AI to anonymize their writing. The scholar admitted to occasionally using AI to disguise their own writing style when worried about reception, while disclosing the pre-AI version to the editor. This implies that academia needs to start distinguishing between AI-generated ideas and AI-polished expressions.
