Rumor: SSI Solved Continual Learning, But Alignment Becomes Harder
teortaxesTex · x · 2026-08-05
Recent rumors suggest that SSI (Safe Superintelligence), founded by Ilya Sutskever, may have solved 'continual learning' and demonstrated a model that learns on the fly to NVIDIA. This aligns well with Ilya's long-standing research focus.
However, this theory faces a core contradiction: continually learning models are extremely difficult to align safely because they are always in training. Without a fixed period of weight updates to test and lock down behaviors, there is no guarantee that early alignment training will persist over time. Given SSI's mission for a safe path to ASI and their planned model release in August, releasing a continual learner without robust alignment guarantees seems unlikely.

- The author reflects on Steve Jobs' 1983 speech at the International Design Conference, where Jobs criticized top designers for focusing on cars and buildings while ignoring the upcoming new object in human lives: computers. Jobs predicted that people would spend hours a day interacting with computers, turning them from mere tools into an environment covering work, education, and home. The author uses this as a metaphor for the current AI wave: models are shipping regardless of whether they make people sharper or duller. This time, the object reshaping human environment isn't plastic or glass, but language, which sits directly inside the act of thinking. — r0ck3t23 · 2026-08-05
