The Standard Playbook for AI Startups: Prototype with Frontier Models, Optimize for Production
realmadhuguru · x · 2026-08-04
After speaking with several founders, the author notes a standard playbook is emerging for AI product development:
- Prototyping: Use the best frontier models. Maximize quality and ignore cost and latency to focus on understanding user needs and iterating.
- Production: Once the workflow and UX are validated, optimize aggressively for cost and latency using prompt engineering, model routing, harnesses, smaller models, and fine-tuning.
The author observes that most teams currently get stuck in step 1, failing to transition into production optimization.
