Karpathy Tests Claude Opus: Writes 5,500 Lines of Code in 2 Hours to Generate 3D Film

Andrej Karpathy recently conducted an extreme test: giving Claude Opus a $10 budget (1M tokens) and the opening text of The Lord of the Rings, asking it to generate Three.js rendering code. Opus autonomously ran for about 2 hours, wrote 5,500 lines of code, and successfully built a procedurally rendered 3D scene with polygon assets and animations.
Developer MengTo took this further, letting Opus run in Claude Code for 2 hours to generate a cinematic Three.js short film entirely within a single HTML file. The AI autonomously created the story, scenes, transitions, and camera movements, while Higgsfield generated the narration and music. The author primarily provided visual references and prompted the AI to continuously verify its work. The project is now open source.
