Commenting on a post about Qwen 3.8 Max ranking #2 among open-weight models on the Vals Index, AI researcher teortaxesTex shared a bold perspective. He argued that while factors like distillation, jaggedness, and fast-following might lower expectations, the differentials in compute, spending, and headcount between the US and China are simply too massive.

Given this context, China "should" be much further behind. Yet, he observes that the combined research capability of Chinese AI companies currently exceeds that of their American counterparts.
