SK hynix topping TSMC revenue sparks debate: Is memory really simpler than logic?
yacineMTB · x · 2026-08-03
SK hynix recently generating more revenue than TSMC has sparked heated industry discussion. Analysts point out that memory manufacturing is fundamentally much simpler than logic chip production—for instance, DRAM requires 3x fewer BEOL metal layers than logic chips. In contrast, TSMC has to hit tin droplets with EUV lasers 60,000 times per second to etch nanometer-scale features for advanced nodes. This massive disparity in manufacturing complexity has led many to question the sustainability of current memory chip revenues.
