Gary Marcus argues that OpenAI's Astra demo, lacking a control group and not clearly better than Fable, was a distraction from its deteriorating economics. He cites Ross Hendricks' claim that hyperscaler revenue depends on OpenAI/Anthropic compute demand, and if they lose share to cheaper Chinese models, the entire AI supply chain could collapse. Marcus says he called their bluff.
