Enterprise IT Procurement Can't Keep Up with AI Iteration, Forcing Architectural Overhauls

The author argues that the demand curve for intelligence predicted by Sam Altman will hit enterprise IT much earlier than the consumer market. If the average person uses 500 billion tokens per month by 2033, large enterprises will cross that threshold years earlier.
Current enterprise IT capacity planning is fundamentally misaligned:
- Procurement Lag: In regulated environments, it takes 9-12 months to go from a business case to a signed contract. By the time legal reviews are done, the model evaluated during the RFP is already generations behind.
- Cost Black Hole: Uncapped demand for intelligence arrives as an uncapped invoice. Very few IT organizations can currently state what a single agent run costs, making it impossible to price workflows or forecast ROI.
- Architectural Overhaul: Enterprises must adopt architectures where the model is swappable, keeping the routing layer between enterprise data and the model strictly under their control.
Furthermore, while tool fluency is crucial, the real moat is deep knowledge of internal systems. Small teams with both attributes will consistently outperform large teams that only have one.
