Gallup Survey: Americans Cool Toward AI, With 39% Saying It Does More Harm Than Good

According to a recent Bentley University-Gallup survey, Americans' attitudes toward artificial intelligence have turned skeptical after previously improving. While 70% of respondents now claim familiarity with AI, more people believe the technology does more harm than good.
The percentage of Americans who think AI does more harm than good has risen to 39% in 2026, up from 31% in 2025, nearly matching the 40% recorded in 2023. Only 9% believe AI does more good than harm. This negativity is particularly pronounced among young adults, with 47% of those aged 18 to 29 expressing negative views, up from 36% last year. Furthermore, more Americans expect AI to reduce U.S. jobs over the next decade and are less likely to trust businesses to use it responsibly.
