Karpathy Tests Opus: Writes 5,500 Lines of Three.js to Render LOTR in 2 Hours

TAbrodi · x · 2026-08-02

Andrej Karpathy shared an experiment where he gave Claude 3 Opus the first paragraph of Lord of the Rings, a 1M token budget ($10), and asked for a Three.js render.

Opus spent 2 hours writing 5,500 lines of code to procedurally render the story. Karpathy was amazed that the LLM could place and orchestrate 3D polygon assets and write functional animation code. He believes such complex tasks are pushing the boundaries of LLM capabilities, sparking discussions in the community about the need for a dedicated Three.js benchmark.
