Matt Shumer refutes Gary Marcus: tools + LLMs is what worked, not neurosymbolic
mattshumer_ · x · 2026-08-02
Matt Shumer responded to Gary Marcus on X, pointing out that Marcus's 2023 post did say 'some kind of hybrid may well work,' but for years Marcus meant neurosymbolic architecture, not LLMs using tools. Shumer cited Marcus's July 2025 praise of the IMO gold result for not using tools, contradicting his current attribution. Shumer accused Marcus of misrepresenting the passage and lacking intellectual integrity.
