Are Stacked PRs Obsolete in the AI Coding Era? GitHub Engineers Respond

Commentator Gergely Orosz recently argued that GitHub's newly shipped stacked PRs feature is years late. While highly useful between 2015-2025, he believes its relevance has diminished significantly now that AI models write a larger share of code.
GitHub software engineer Sameen pushed back on this critique. Acknowledging they should have shipped earlier, she detailed the immense technical challenges of building features on a platform with massive legacy systems, millions of users, and billions of commits. She emphasized that GitHub customers are currently shipping and reviewing code with both humans and AI agents, making any tool that eases industry workflows a significant win rather than a siloed or useless feature.
