A former Google team member revealed that Google had essentially built ChatGPT a year before it actually came out, under codenames like LMChat.
However, Google was reportedly too nervous to release it, and DeepMind was blocked from shipping products that could disrupt Google's existing business lines. This internal hesitation cost them the early lead in the generative AI race.
