Amazon Shuts Down AGI Lab After Just 18 Months

Amazon has quietly shut down its AGI Lab less than 18 months after its launch. The unit, which focused on making AI agents more useful for businesses, has seen its leader depart and its projects folded into other areas.

Industry analyst David Linthicum notes that this move validates his previous predictions about the over-hyping of AGI. He argues that true AGI requires general reasoning, net-new idea creation, and deep contextual understanding—capabilities far removed from simply prompting generative AI models. While models can be highly impressive for specific tasks, general intelligence remains a fundamentally different challenge.
