OpenAI Slashes Affordable GPT-5.6 Model Prices by 80% Amid Price War
The Decoder · rss · 2026-07-31
OpenAI announced massive price cuts for its GPT-5.6 model lineup to combat intensifying market competition.
Starting July 30, the most affordable Luna model will see an 80% price reduction, while the Terra model drops by 20%. OpenAI claims its top-tier Sol model has improved internal infrastructure efficiency, enabling the cuts. However, price pressure from cheap Chinese providers and Microsoft's internal MAI models likely played a significant role in forcing the strategy.
