NVIDIA-Led 'Open Weights' Coalition Accused of Hijacking Open Source Definition

Jensen Huang's first-ever X post amplified a coalition letter titled Open Weights and American AI Leadership, hosted on NVIDIA's servers. The letter quickly garnered over 70 signatories, including Meta, Mozilla, the Linux Foundation, and Hugging Face.

The author argues that the letter borrows the moral authority of open-source software to defend open-weight models. It defines open weights using four verbs—"download, inspect, modify, and run"—while deliberately omitting the verb "rebuild."

True open source allows reconstructing the artifact from published materials, whereas open weights merely provide the compiled output. This allows labs to claim openness while withholding training data and code, leaving compliance officers with no clear ground for regulation.
