China’s domestic AI-chip stack is advancing fast enough to replace Nvidia in some tasks

A WSJ-linked post argues that China is building a domestic AI-chip stack faster than many expected, despite U.S. export controls and lack of EUV access.
It cites a sharp decline in imported AI chips—from about 90% in 2021 to below 60% by 2025—and Morgan Stanley’s estimate that the foreign share could fall to 25% by 2030. Huawei is reportedly combining older manufacturing tools with advanced packaging, chip stacking, and large clusters, and its Ascend chips are already good enough to replace Nvidia hardware for some AI workloads. China is still behind on raw compute, but complete chip sovereignty now looks plausible.
