Google AI Overviews still shape most users’ first impression of AI

Because of Google’s search dominance, most people first encounter AI through AI Overviews, which still make mistakes even after recent improvements. In Felix Simon’s view, their failures are less about outright hallucination and more about picking the wrong sources, misreading satire, or cherry-picking evidence.

That matters because it shapes the baseline impression ordinary users get of AI: not the frontier model experience, but a default answer layer that is harder to interrogate and easier to trust incorrectly.
