A third-party study, highlighted in a repost of an IIHS article, says Waymo’s driverless vehicles had 68% fewer crashes per vehicle mile traveled than human drivers across San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin.
- The post explains an important reporting caveat: until a 2025 amendment to the Self-Driving Vehicle Incident Reporting Rule, companies had to log even minor incidents as crashes.
- Example: scraping a vehicle’s undercarriage while turning into a parking lot could count as a crash, which can distort naive comparisons.
