AMD says agentic AI shifts datacenter demand from GPUs back to CPUs

AMD is arguing that the shift from chatbots to agentic AI changes the compute mix in datacenters: instead of a mostly GPU-heavy workload, agents spend much more time on CPUs for orchestration, tool use, database queries, and generated code execution.

The company says the CPU-to-GPU ratio has moved from roughly 1:4 in the chatbot era to 1:1 and growing for agentic workloads. To serve that market, AMD is positioning 6th-gen EPYC “Venice” as a portfolio: a high-frequency SP7 part for GPU host nodes and sandboxes, an efficiency-tuned SP8 for enterprise, a cache-heavy Venice-X for technical computing, and a low-power Verano part for AI host nodes.
