Mila Quebec is hosting a talk on a deceptively hard research question: what do benchmarks actually measure for African-language AI?
The speaker, Prof. Vukosi Marivate (University of Pretoria), is highlighted as a major figure in African AI and co-founder of:
- Lelapa AI
- Masakhane NLP
- DeepIndaba
The event focuses on:
- evaluation challenges for low-resource and African languages
- how benchmark design can misrepresent real capability
- AI for Africans by Africans, including links to policy and social impact
After the talk, Vukosi will join Yoshua Bengio for a fireside chat on evaluation, safety, and how research priorities get set. The talk is scheduled for Friday, July 24 at 10:30am and will be recorded and streamed.
