Codex Desktop elevated Windows sandbox hangs during ACL setup and leaks helper processes
buyeXX · ghdev · 2026-07-17
A Windows Codex Desktop user reports that the elevated Windows sandbox hangs during ACL setup and leaves helper processes behind.
Environment
- Codex Desktop 26.715.2305.0
- bundled CLI codex-cli 0.145.0-alpha.18
- native Windows workspace, not WSL
- top-level sandbox mode: workspace-write
- Windows sandbox mode: elevated
Failure mode
- even a simple read-only workspace command never reaches PowerShell
- the command hangs for more than 30 seconds and must be killed
- codex-windows-sandbox-setup.exe keeps running instead of exiting
- several lingering setup helpers accumulate
- logs show the ACL phase starts, but setup binary completed is never reached
- the intended workspace probe file is never created
Mitigation observed
Switching the Windows sandbox implementation to unelevated makes the same workspace operations work normally without danger-full-access.
The reporter suspects a regression or incomplete fix related to an earlier Windows elevated sandbox issue.
