ConvFill: A 0.6B Talker Buys Time While a Large Reasoner Whispers the Real Answer
andimarafioti · x · 2026-10-26
ConvFill tackles the fast-or-smart tradeoff in voice agents by pairing a tiny 0.6B talker model with a large reasoner. After the user's speech is transcribed, the talker replies quickly to buy time while the reasoner thinks; the reasoner's response is then fed to the talker to continue the conversation.
The analogy: you're on a panel with rocket scientists and have an expert whispering in your earbud — you reply fast to not blow your cover, then start saying what the expert tells you.
The author tried the model and thinks the core idea works and is a promising direction, though the talker needs to be a bit smarter for it to feel like magic.
