A small AI safety policy team says it helped pass three of the most significant state AI laws

Secure AI Project says Congress still has not passed any federal frontier AI law, so state lawmakers have effectively become the closest thing the U.S. has to a real AI safety framework.

The post highlights California, New York, and Illinois as the leading examples, says those states represent about 40% of the U.S. AI market, and notes that frontier developers there now face catastrophic-risk reporting requirements, with Illinois also moving toward independent third-party safety audits.

The team says draft federal legislation is now building on those state frameworks, and it is hiring for four roles to help expand and federalize the approach.
