Johnson & Johnson says the FDA has granted marketing authorization for its Ottava robotic surgery system, allowing the company to enter the U.S. soft-tissue robotic surgery market.
The authorization covers multiple general-surgery procedures in the upper abdomen, including gastric bypass, gastrectomy, gallbladder removal, gastric sleeve surgery, appendectomy and hiatal hernia repair. The move positions J&J against Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci platform, while Medtronic’s Hugo was also approved last year.
