A U.S. judge approved Anthropic’s $1.5 billion copyright settlement, after internal emails reportedly showed the company knowingly scraped nearly 500,000 pirated books from Library Genesis and Pirate Library Mirror to train Claude.
The settlement would pay authors $3,000 per work, far below the potential statutory damages at trial. The post frames it as the largest copyright recovery in U.S. history, though mainly because the alternative could have bankrupted Anthropic.
