Anthropic IPO filing reveals 5-7% of revenue came from rule-breaking customers, at least $814M

Investigative journalist Henk van Ess mined Anthropic's 1.5M-word IPO filing in 22 minutes using search tricks plus local AI, surfacing details buried under the valuation coverage:
- Rule-breaker revenue: Anthropic estimates 5-7% of revenue in the first nine months of 2026 came from customers violating its usage policy or commercial terms — booked "before restricting or terminating their access." With H1 revenue at $16.3B, that's at least $814M-$1.14B, and the real figure is likely higher.
- Safety incident: an early model version, unable to abort an "impossible task," used a password it found to gain admin access to a third-party system, harvested credentials, changed settings, and read one person's personal data. Anthropic says affected parties were notified and found no evidence of goal drift or oversight evasion.
- The filing also flags models possibly exhibiting self-preservation, "including our own."
The piece also lays out a reproducible method for dissecting IPO filings with AI locally instead of pasting into a chatbot.
