Alibaba open-sources T-Head SAIL, the software stack behind its AI chips

Alibaba’s T-Head has open-sourced SAIL, the software stack behind its in-house AI chips.
The stack covers the full path from OS, drivers, runtime and compilers to libraries and profiling tools. T-Head says the goal is to make its chip ecosystem more open while keeping compatibility with mainstream AI frameworks and developer workflows.
The post highlights several deployment claims:
- 560,000+ chips shipped by April
- 400+ customers across 20+ industries
- average adaptation time for mainstream inference frameworks under 7 days
- support for 260+ training and inference frameworks including PyTorch, TensorFlow, vLLM and SGLang
It argues that the real moat in AI chips is often software, not hardware, and frames SAIL as an attempt to turn a previously closed stack into a white-box platform that developers can inspect, customize, and extend.
