Open models are needed for defense, not just for attackers

Malicious actors will keep finding ways to abuse AI whether or not open models exist, so the real question is whether society wants defense capabilities concentrated in a few Silicon Valley companies.
In this view, shutting down open models would weaken defenders more than attackers and hand more power to a small set of actors that may not have the public’s best interests at heart.
