Replit CEO on the 'self-driving company': agents to absorb coordination costs by 2030
amasad · x · 2026-10-27
Replit CEO Amjad Masad published a long-form essay arguing that AI agents will trigger the biggest shift in how companies operate in a century.
Starting from Coase's 1937 theory of transaction costs, he frames management layers, meetings and bureaucracy as internal coordination costs firms have accepted for decades. Software ate the world but still needed humans to operate it; as agents take over execution and coordination, companies can run far more efficiently.
An accompanying timeline charts the path: Coase (1937) → Drucker's knowledge worker (1959) → PC, email, spreadsheets, cloud, mobile → ChatGPT (2022) → Replit Agent (2024) → 'Agent habitats' (2026) → 'Every company is self-driving' (2030).
