The side with more compute will then dominate and drive down service costs. - **Stagnating demand growth**: If most practical tasks don't require extreme "frontier intelligence," cheaper "near-frontier models" will capture more market share. - **Disrupted cost structures**: If a novel architecture or compute structure emerges, delivering frontier intelligence at drastically lower costs, the current compute premium will vanish. - **Infinite compute supply**: If compute becomes infinitely abundant and cheap, the scarcity of frontier intelligence disappears, significantly reducing its demand and premium. The author implies that while the "bitter lesson" (compute is king) currently prevails, these variables could reshape the industry's profit distribution at any time.
