Open-Source Frontier Weights and the US-China Race

The author agrees with the premise that releasing frontier model weights to the public is a valid strategy, but pushes back against calling it "weird." The argument is that if a company's COGS are low enough to remain profitable post-release, they should do it. This accelerates the entire industry, even if it acts as a decelerator for Western frontier labs.
The author further notes that if Chinese companies can achieve this at a lower cost, Western labs relying solely on selling tokens will face immense pressure; these labs will either have to expand upstream/downstream to capture more value chain or rely on government protection. The real question moving forward is: if the US government intervenes, will China respond in kind, pushing the competition into a deeper policy game?
