Nature Paper: Predicting Disease Trajectories

EricTopol · x · 2026-07-15

This post highlights a newly published paper in Nature addressing a core question: Can a person's health and disease trajectory be predicted years in advance using their electronic health records (EHR) and polygenic risk scores?

The author's research was motivated by an early clinical case involving a 34-year-old patient who suffered a "textbook" myocardial infarction. Standard risk models failed to flag the patient the day before the event, highlighting traditional models' inability to capture how diseases dynamically evolve against a genetic background. Eric Topol also mentioned that he will be dissecting this research further with the authors on Friday.
