Rumor: OpenAI Developing Screenless AI Companion

Bloomberg reports that OpenAI is developing a screenless, camera-equipped, mobile AI companion device. Shaped like a battery-powered smart speaker, it can move around the house, control smart appliances, play media, send and receive messages, and understand its surroundings via cameras and sensors.\n\nThe vision for this device is that its personality will become more human-like and proactive over time, predicting user needs based on habits, context, and personal information (including emails). It also features internal mechanical elements that move autonomously to enhance the feeling of it being "alive."\n\nInternally, OpenAI refers to it as a "computer for AI." It reportedly uses GPT-Live, which can listen and speak simultaneously, and is designed by LoveFrom. OpenAI pushed the project forward after acquiring io Products, planning to announce it this year and ship it in 2027, though Apple's trade secret lawsuit could cause delays.
