Demis Hassabis published a rare long-form article suggesting that AGI could arrive within the next few years and that we are currently at the "frontier of the singularity." He compares the impact of AGI to the discovery of electricity or fire rather than conventional tech leaps like the internet or smartphones, even stating its shock could be "10 times that of the Industrial Revolution, and 10 times as fast."
He also warned that frontier AI will pose severe risks in cybersecurity, biosecurity, and the development of more autonomous agents. He proposed establishing a "Frontier AI Standards Institution" to evaluate the most advanced models, functioning similarly to the financial industry's self-regulatory organization, FINRA.
The article further advocates for voluntary pre-release AGI testing, which could eventually become mandatory for US frontier labs, with hopes of expanding globally. This framework should apply to both open-source and closed-source models, with labs sharing models for evaluation prior to deployment.
