Do Automated Evaluation Platforms Actually Work?
doesdatmaksense · x · 2026-07-13
The author and @HamelHusain tested the effectiveness of "automated evaluation" using 100 real production traces from an apartment rental voice agent.
Methodology
- Manually review failure cases first.
- Hide the labels and task different systems with the same error analysis and failure mode discovery.
- Benchmark against: Braintrust, Arize, LangSmith, as well as ChatGPT, Codex, Claude Code, Factory Droid.
Focus
The goal is to verify whether automated evaluation platforms can reliably identify failure modes in production systems like a human would, rather than just producing good-looking metrics.
