Precision Machining Is the Robotics Moat

After speaking with several vertically integrated robotics companies, the author concluded that one of the biggest cost drivers in robotics is precision-machined parts.
If machining remains outsourced, lowering costs becomes extremely difficult. However, by deeply internalizing and continuously optimizing machining and manufacturing processes, it’s possible to achieve a viable cost structure even within Europe. The author argues that precision machining and manufacturing capabilities themselves could be the ultimate moat for robotics companies.
