Zhipu AI Explores In-House AI Chips After GLM-5.2 Usage Surges 27x

According to The Information, Beijing-based Zhipu AI has made initial inquiries with Chinese chip design firms to explore developing its own AI chips, though no partner has been selected yet. The trigger was the explosive growth of GLM-5.2 on the Vercel aggregator—average daily token usage surged by up to 27x in its first week, making it the fastest-growing model.

Zhipu currently relies on Huawei Ascend chips, other domestic chips, and a small number of Nvidia chips. However, US export controls, Huawei hardware limitations, and Zhipu's own addition to the US blacklist create huge uncertainty in compute supply, prompting the company to explore self-reliance.
